4 Hyperbolic groups

So far, we obtained a lot of information about groups by seeing how they act

on trees. Philosophically, the reason for this is that trees are very “negatively

curved” spaces. We shall see in this chapter than in general, whenever a group

acts on a negatively curved space, we can learn a lot about the group.
